Review: Family Time in TYRE

9/9/2016

TYRE is as fascinating by day as much as by night! Visiting this beautiful place in South of Lebanon is just a must. It's a long drive to get there (2.5 hours) and can be very hectic with young kids, thus I'd recommend at least a 1 night stay. This will also gives you more time and energy to wander around, explore, and enjoy this marvelous city.

You are free to stay 1 or 2 nights,  and you will still be able to do all the basic and most recommended sightseeing regardless of your stay duration.

Following our latest family vacation in TYRE (check previous post of our stay review) this is how we planned it.

Day 1

Upon checking in we enjoyed 3 hours of swimming and some relaxation time. After that we had a warm bath, changed and started our exploration time. After 1/2 an hour of driving through lots and lots of banana fields we reached Naqqoura. We stood at a cliff which was the farthest point in south of Lebanon and 1 minute away from the borders! I have to say it was a very exciting moment. The view, the clouds, the rocks, the wind everything was clean and beautiful.

We captured as much sweet memories as we could before we headed back to Tyr.

Picture
When in TYR you have to visit the old Souks, the fishing harbor, and most important of all the sweet and colorful street. I was so impressed with the design of each house, The entire street is very colorful and vivid. Narrow streets, colorful walls, painted window frames and fruits and vegetables cart sellers,

Dar Alma

We took a quick sneak peak in this vert sweet Boutique Hotel, check it out!

Al-Fanar restaurant and auberge

Our go to restaurant whenever we are in TYR. Al-Fanar restaurant and auberge is a bed and breakfast hotel with a cave pub and a seafood and sushi restaurant. The terrace outside the pub is a great choice for a late-afternoon drink or  to indulge in a yummy food while hearing the waves crashing on the rocks under you

Day 2

If you are sleeping over in a hotel try to wake up early to enjoy an appetizing and fulfilling breakfast. You'll need the energy for your historical and touristic sightseeing.

The sights open at 9:00 am. Our first stop was

TYRE World Heritage Site

Just past the entrance of this sprawling site is a vast funerary complex , with hundreds of ornate stone and marble sarcophagi. Next to it, a well-preserved Roman road stretches for about 1.6km from an impressive 20m-high monumental archway that probably dates from the time of Emperor Hadrian (2nd century AD). Beyond the archway is a large and well preserved Roman hippodrome built in the 2nd century AD; this once held more than 20,000 spectators. Roman, Crusader, Byzantine and many more ruins all in one spot!

Entrance Fees: 7,000 / adults and Kids for Free
Tips:  As the site is vast try not to go during midday (no shade) and use a pair of good shoes, hats, water and don't stay more than 1.5 hour cause kids will get tired and cranky,

TYRE Archaeological Site: Al-Bass

these atmospheric ruins cover a large area leading down to an ancient submerged harbour . Highlights include a street paved with geometrical Roman and Byzantine mosaics , on each side of which are rows of large columns.

A five-minute walk north of the main Al-Mina site brings you to the ruins of a 12th-century Crusader cathedral, along with a network of Roman and Byzantine roads.

Entrance fees; 6,000 / adults - Kids for Free
Tips: We spent around 30-40 minutes in this site.
Once it's noon head over for a refreshing short break and enjoy a delicious seafood meal in 1 of the many restaurants available along the shore!

It is interesting that in such a small country, there is a huge load of history coexisting with modern life. Even though Lebanon is this small, yet we are still discovering and exploring more new and fun places, What makes it even better is enjoying the experience with your family and loved ones.
