Last weekend we started a road trip with no direction in mind, just wanted to get out of the city's traffic and heat. We went up Broumana road then Douwar - Mrouj till we found ourselves in Zahle!
At that point I knew we had to pass by Tanbakji Restaurant .
This is exactly what the lovely owner wanted her customers to feel! She always wanted to have her own restaurant that gives visitors a homey and warm feeling.
The first thing you will see as you enter is the long bar shaped like a dresser with old bronze kitchen utensils on the counter-top. Centering the room, and just above your head, a large chandelier hangs from the ceiling. Black and White framed Photos of historic people and places, painted flower pots, and colored wooden windows decorated the walls giving the place a Lebanese spirit.
Every item was carefully selected. purchased, and transported from Beirut's Old Bzar Shop. What once were thrown items by their original owners were converted to pieces of art adorning different corners of the restaurant.
The space was filled with wooden tables each covered with flower patters covers and surrounded by colored benches & wooden chairs with comfy cushions. Tiny wooden Bird houses hanging from the trees, with a grape vines adding shades and green magic to the place.
Add up to gaz Lanterns on the walls and wooden beams, refurbished kitchen cupboard and outdoor bar with traditional board games for guest's entertainment.
Chicken Liver with lemon and zaatar, super fresh fattouch, crispy fries, hummus, cheese pops, stuffed vine leave (full to the maximum), mixed BBQ plate and let me tell you meat was very tender.
You can easily taste the flavor in each and every plate.
Last but not least... Desserts
Meghle served in a traditional Turkish coffee cups, the chocolate biscuit tastes exactly like home, and the Mouhallabiya was just superb, fresh and heavy!
Lots of other yummy delights on the menu crepes, Lezze2iyet, Smidiyeh bel khebez el mar2ou2.
Unfortunately at that point we were too full to taste any, but we sure got our eyes on them for next time.
If you happen to be in Zahle then make sure you also pass by and enjoy that cozy green terrace as long as it's open.
