I felt selfish and helpless. How can I compete with that? How can I stimulate and develop my children with home activities? How can I entertain them all day every day for the entire summer? How can I offer them all sorts of creative and fun things to do and fill out their time?
Then I read an interesting article: Children should be allowed to get bored, expert says
I remember my own marvelous craft-free childhood. My mother didn’t craft with us, not because she was lazy or lacked creativity. She didn’t craft with us because we were outside. Or reading. Or playing a game. She didn’t craft with us because it wasn’t her job to entertain us.
If you grew up in the 80s, you will know the childhood I'm talking about!
You see, back then our parents main concern was to give us a good education and meet our occasional requests for trendy toys. That's about it. I was one of the kids whose parents didn't even enroll in any sort of hobby classes. My dad mentality was what for? We use to spend the entire summer shifting between the balconies, or playing down in the parking lot, occasionally allowed to play in the Church yard space, and twice / month go play in AUB greenfield! That's it...
Here’s the thing: I'm gradually learning that It’s not my job to make sure they are constantly entertained. Of course I will play with them, and have fun with them. I even give them a little nudge of an idea.
But they have to LEARN to KEEP THEMSELVES busy.
We love to play with our children, it helps us bond with them, learn from them, and teach them. But, we also love to watch our children come up with their own games and explore their own interests, independent from us.
Here are some of the reasons why you should let your kids get bored:
- It sharpens the imagination.
- It fosters sibling bonding.
- It makes them creative.
- It leads to open-ended play.
- It helps kids be Independent
- It relieve Stress
- It leads to a better Sleep
Make yourself unavailable, too!
NOTE: That getting Bored doesn't mean MESS the ENTIRE HOUSE!! I already don't have a Helper and I spend my entire day cleaning the house thus WE don't do any sort of MESSY activities inside the House (No scientific or FOOD experiments - & painting time is very supervised!!!)
Being creative means:
- Make your own SHAPES and DESIGNS via LEGO -
- Play with Cubes and Puzzles
- Take a pencil and DRAW
- Color and craft
- Build Castles via pillows
- Have a Pillow Fight
- Pretend Play (cooking - Fireman - Doctors...)
Give them the space to experience this emotion. To explore, learn, to imagine and unwind their skills! Push them and you will see how kids are pretty good at entertaining themselves. It isn’t easy. They get loud. They get into fights. And yes they will bring their room down with ALL their Toys (I make mine CLEAN UP & ORGANIZE it all or otherwise NO Bedtime Story!)
YES I do Believe getting bored is worth it. After all, they're having a childhood full of simple pleasures, and Summer also means free time for children to enjoy themselves with less rules and regulations. YET, don't get me wrong but that doesn't mean HOUSE RULES will be BENT, CHANGED or even ERASED!
